Week of January 24 - 31, 2022

First Grade has been learning about polar animals in science class.  The students have been discovering some of the different adaptations polar animals have made to be able to survive.  Blubber is one of these adaptations we have been discussing.

To discover how a thick layer of blubber keeps polar animals warm, First Grade did an experiment!  In the classroom, we had a tub filled with icy cold water and a plastic bag mitten filled with shortening.  The shortening was taking the place of blubber. Before starting, the students made some predictions about how their hands would feel in the water and in the blubber mitten.

The students discovered that they were not able to keep their bare hands in the cold water very long.  But when the students put their hands in the water wearing the blubber mitten, they discovered the water didn't feel so cold!  The blubber mitten helped warm the class' hands in the icy water, just the way real blubber helps to warm polar animals' bodies.
