 Week of February 21 - 25, 2022

At HCA on Tuesday, we celebrated the 100th day of school!  In First Grade, we celebrated in a couple different ways.  We read a story about the 100th day of school, shared what we have liked the best about the past 100 days, and did some 100 day crafts.  Our favorite was making
100 day necklaces!

The students used 10 frames to count out 100 Fruit Loops.  After they had 100 Fruit Loops counted and ready to go, the students began stringing the Fruit Loops onto their yarn. Some Fruit Loops may have been sampled along the way!  The students added counting markers to separate the groups of tens and show how many Fruit Loops were on the necklace at specific points.

Once the Fruit Loops were all added, we tied the ends together to make some very tasty and sweet smelling jewelry!

Week of February 14 - 18, 2022

During the morning announcements this month, we have been learning about various famous African Americans and their important contributions to the world.  To extend our learning, we have been doing the same thing in First Grade.  The students each selected a famous African American to research.  The students then researched and completed  biographies about their famous people.  To accompany the biographies, each student was also responsible for creating a 'Biography Bottle' of his/her famous person.

The results were amazing!  The children were each so proud to share their projects with the class.  The students were all so creative and put forth such effort.  We had visitors who kept stopping by to check out our biography bottles because they heard such wonderful things about them!  We can't wait to put them on display in the hallways!  Great job, First Graders!

 Week of February 7 - 11, 2021

First Grade has been continuing with our Animal Science unit.  Last week, we discussed different things animals who do not migrate or hibernate need to do to survive the winter.  The students discovered several animals which change colors in winter in order to camouflage in with their surroundings.  The First Graders also learned about the types of homes that animals need to find or build to survive the cold winter temperatures.

To help extend their learning, the students each randomly chose an animal which is awake or hibernates during the winter months.  Next, the students were each given some toothpicks and marshmallows with which they needed to build a home that their animal could fit in and would protect their animal.  Check out their creations below!
