Week of November 15 - 19, 2021

This week, First Grade took another walk around the campus enjoying the beautiful, but chilly, weather.  We observed the colors of the leaves and how many leaves the trees had dropped since our last walk outside.  The students then collected leaves to bring inside.  They were surprised by how much bigger leaf selection they had this time as opposed to what they had 2 weeks ago.  This time, the leaves they found were more colorful and were from a wider variety of trees.

We also listened to the story "Leaf Man" by Lois Ehlert.  While looking at the illustrations on each page, the class was amazed by all of the different things Lois Ehlert created out of leaves and other things found in nature.  This got our imaginations working and wondering what could we each create out of the leaves we each collected.  Check out the students' creativity at work!

Week of November 8 - 12, 2021

First Grade has been observing the changes in nature we see happening around us right now.  The students made hypotheses about why leaves change color, before discovering the reason why.  The students walked around the campus and collected some leaves.  They brought them back inside to make leaf rubbings.

Ever since, we have been enjoying watching the leaves on the tree right outside our window change from green, to yellowish, to brighter shades of yellow and orange.

First Grade has been learning about what the word community means and ways to help and make our community a better place.  We have been also discussing ways to bring cheer to others' lives.  Our new service partner is Little Flower Manor, a skilled nursing care facility located in Darby.  First Grade will be connecting with the residents in various ways throughout the year.

We began making Thanksgiving cards to send to the residents.  The class is taking their card making very seriously.  They have written some very heartfelt messages that I am sure will mean a lot  to the recipients.
