Week of October 25 - 29, 2021

First Grade enjoyed a special assembly for All Abilities Month.  Our guest of honor, Simon, shared some of the tools and devices he uses to help him navigate the world.  He answered our questions and let us examine some of his favorite books from when he was younger.  The children enjoyed comparing their books with Simon's.  They were able to discover how the pictures and words in Simon's books are different from theirs.  Simon also showed the students a play performed by a group called Acting Without Borders, of which Simon is a member.

This week, to preparation for Halloween, First Grade learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin.  We also did some pumpkin investigations.  The students made their hypotheses about certain characteristics of their pumpkins, such as weight and ability to float.  Next, the class tested their hypotheses.  They discovered if the pumpkins would sink or float, measured their pumpkins' width, counted how many ribs their pumpkins had, and learned how much their pumpkins weighed.

 Week of October 18 - 22, 2021

First Grade has been continuing to learn about the scientific method in Science class.  We have been discussing the word "hypothesis" and what that means.  The students have also continued to develop their observation skills during experiments.

This week we conducted the experiment "Walking Water".  Each group was given a cup of red water, a cup of yellow water, and a cup which was empty.  The students watched as the colored water "walked" up the paper towels into the empty cup.  They discovered that when the two different colors of water mixed in the empty cup a new color was created!  The class  recorded their observations throughout the experiment and checked their hypotheses at the end.

First Grade enjoyed the experiment so much, we decided to see if "walking water" would create a rainbow, too!  Check out below to see what we discovered.

It worked!

To help get our room looking even more festive, First Grade created monsters!  They are all very scary creatures!!!

November is All Religions month, when we celebrate the central themes of love and goodness that all religions share. We plan to have a panel of people from different faiths briefly share what is special about their religion to them and a favorite celebration or practice that they enjoy about their religion. If you or someone you know would like to be part of this in any way, please contact Julie Myers at jmyers@holychildacademy.com .

    Week of October 11th - 15th

This past week in First Grade has been very busy!  We have had lots of excitement and activity that gave us lots to which to look forward.  The anticipation grows every day as HCA's Mission Party grows closer and closer!

In Science, First Grade has been learning about how scientists use their 5 senses.  We have done several experiments using our 5 senses, just like scientists.  Last Friday, First Grade completed the "Skittles Surprise" experiment.  The students observed and recorded the changes they saw happening, once the Skittles were dropped in the water.  First Grade was very surprised by what happened to the "S's" that were printed on the Skittles!

This week, HCA celebrated Founder's Day on Wednesday.  The staff and students joined together in a prayer service, where each class' service partners for the school year were announced.

On Thursday, HCA celebrated Founder's Day with activities led by Middle School.  The students were all eager to participate!  The Lower School began the day with a story about Cornelia Connelly.  Then it was time for our groups to rotate through the activity stations.  First Grade had a wonderful time throughout the morning and continued to talk about it for the rest of the day.  The activities were definitely an enjoyable experience for everyone!
